How to Make Cold Foam

Cold brew's best friend.

by Maciej Kasperowicz |

Cold brew and milk go way back. But lately, we’ve been switching things up—and so have a lot of folks around the Trade office. Instead of a splash of milk, we’re topping our cold brews with a layer of cold foam.

Cold foam adds a creamy texture and a little boost of flavor, turning a simple cup into something that feels just a bit more special. And the best part? It’s easy to make at home—especially with our new Cold Foam Kit, which has everything you need to start foaming, sipping, and elevating your cold brew game.

More Cold Foam Recipes

Salted Caramel Cold Brew

The most basic cold foam recipe, but what a fun upgrade. Just add a salted caramel syrup to your cream (or oat milk!) before whisking it up and enjoy a sweet and salty note that both contrasts with and complements the cold brew.

Irish Coffee

One thing about cold foam is that there’s no reason to save it for cold drinks. A slightly more pourable foam makes for a much better texture than whipped cream, and its temperature contrast with hot coffee is heavenly. For our ideal Irish coffee:

  • Combine 6 oz of strongly brewed coffee (any brew method is fine, just brew with more coffee grounds than usual), 1oz of irish whiskey, and ½ oz of simple syrup in a glass.
  • Make cold foam with an ounce of unsweetened heavy cream.
  • Gently pour cold foam over coffee/booze/syrup mixture. Pouring over the back of a spoon can help it not sink.
  • Garnish with grated nutmeg.

Grasshopper Cold Brew

Cold Brew is already refreshing, this cold foam recipe inspired by a classic cocktail is even more so. That’s because we’re making our cold foam minty!

  • Make our regular cold foam recipe with mint syrup.
  • Use a bottled mint syrup (we like the one from JT Copper) or make your own by combining a cup of sugar, a cup of water, and 1 bunch of chopped mint, heating it to dissolve the sugar, and then letting steep for 10 minute before straining.
  • Fill a glass with cold brew and ice.
  • Top with mint cold foam.
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint and a shake of cocoa powder.
