Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

I love this blend. Finishing my second bag with a third on the way. It’s not exactly a “comfort” coffee, but it’s not fruit-forward either. It has a satisfying center that suddenly starts moving. There’s sweetness and liveliness above a very coffee-like foundation. Energetic without becoming sharp or delicate. When I got the grind and brew profile dialed in (on the fellow ode gen 2, it’s a 6.4, which is medium coarse, larger than standard drip, not as chunky as French Press) and brewed at moderate-to-high temperatures (around 205°F), a standard bloom, a few larger pours rather than many tiny pulses, and a brew ratio around 1:16, Power and Glory is everything I want in a cup.
