Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

Fun Fact
You can still see Sightglass' vintage PROBAT roaster in action at their SF flagship in the SOMA district where they roast to order 5 days a week.

Rich, satisfying - in espresso machine

We’ve enjoyed this coffee a lot, primarily for our espresso machine. It was super easy to dial in with these beans for the grinder and also the tamp. Rich crema and deep body with a nice touch of fruit and even cocoa. I’ve been pulling shots for about 25 years, and am so happy with the results and flavor I will be using these beans more often!

I also used this in my Aeropress on a camping getaway. Perfect! BTW I use the “inverted” approach and let the grinds sit for about 90 seconds before pressing. Actually the best ever, out of probably 500 “shots” with Aeropress, with Toketee beans.

    My favorite coffee!

This is my favorite coffee that I’ve tried from Trade. I will continue to buy this coffee as long as they carry it. It has great flavor, is smooth, not bitter, and organic! I’m obsessed with I make it as a pour over coffee in the morning. I look forward to it everyday!
