Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

    Amazing Coffee

Ethiopia Yetatebe Shakisso is a genuinely lovely coffee. It has a bright sweetness with gentle floral notes that feel natural. The texture is smooth and the flavors stay clean from start to finish. It’s probably my favorite coffee.

    Solid flavor

close to light roast and the flavors really pop. Very drinkable coffee. Excellent Ethiopian bean that I could easily drink each day.

    Surprised me

The notes of the coffee are sweet yet subtle. However, the first sip took me back. It was made right as I opened the bad and a sweet raison with light chocolate comes through. My 2nd and 3rd brews didn't hit as well (Hario Switch), but then I took out the aeropress and hit the same notes as the first day, just a bit more subtle.

    Would get it again.

Light in note, but not lacking in flavor :)
