Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

ReAnimator
ABOUT THE ROASTER

ReAnimator

Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia's ReAnimator has been exploring coffee's complexity since 2011. Owned by Mark Capriotti and Mark Corpus, this roaster embraces seasonality like few others—single-origin offerings cycle through frequently, staying on the menu for only weeks before making way for something new.
Fun Fact
ReAnimator began in a row house basement in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood with a small two kilogram roaster.

    Coffee’s Coffee

This was a good go to option for a classic coffee taste. I didn’t read the recommended instructions first and so I under weighed the beans. The second batch was much better!

I personally want a bit more of a bright and funky flavor to my coffee but this is a great go to for anyone!

    It's okay

    Tools:

    - KINGrinder P2

    - Hario V60 + paper filter from Hario

Getting the right grind size for this took some experimenting, grinding them on 45 clicks left me with the subtle taste of peaches and honey, whereas grinding 3 clicks coarser resulted in a very bitter taste. Pretty good if you don't want strong flavors with notes of sweetness here and there. Oh, and if you let it cool down, the honey flavor is noticeable!
