Staff Picks: Scary Good Coffee

It's our most frightening staff picks yet. Read on (if you dare...)

As the Director of Coffee at Trade, I spend a lot of time thinking about coffee. But when I’m not thinking about coffee, I’m often thinking about horror movies — and around once a year those two passions intersect. We've brought you pairings for Candyman, Suspiria, Friday the 13th, and Midsommar before, and now we present four more coffees to pair with four more horror movies:

If you like… The Witches (1990)

Atomic Witch City ($20.00)

Ok, low hanging fruit, but Atomic collaborating with a 10-year-old artist to make a blend called Witch City and Nicolas Roeg adapting a Roald Dahl novel to a theoretically family friendly — but also ghastly — effect just work great together.

If you like… Carrie (1976)

Try…

Verve Granitos de Ortiz ($25.90)

We happily don’t have any coffee with flavor notes of pig’s blood. Also happily, the blood in the most famous scene in Carrie was made of Karo syrup. In her autobiography My Extraordinary Ordinary Life, Sissy Spacek writes, “when they lit the fires behind me to burn down the gym, I felt like a candy apple.” This nutty, apple-y coffee: same vibes.

If You Like… The Queen of Black Magic (2019)

Try…

Airship Sumatra Honey ($22.95)

More and more Indonesian horror films have been making their way to the US, and this absolutely wild haunted house horror is one of my recent favorites. Indonesian coffees have been popular for quite a long time, but this honey process has more sparkling acidity and clean cocoa sweetness than the earthy Sumatras we’re used to.

If You Like… Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

Try…

Methodical Worka Sakara ($27.10)

What’s the closest coffee drinking experience to being wrapped in a cotton candy cocoon like the victims in this cult classic? That’s not a question I ever thought I’d ask, but I think the answer is this delicious naturally processed Ethiopian coffee from Methodical. If fruity candy’s what you reach for at the end of trick or treating, this is the one.
