Staff Picks: International Women's Day

These roasters put the special in specialty coffee.

We love discovering new coffees at home as much as you do! So, we’re letting you in on Team Trade’s current favorites with our weekly series, Staff Picks.

There’s a lot to consider when celebrating International Women's Day. On one hand, there's been some incredible strides made in the past decades with regard to gender equality. On the other hand, it can sometimes feel we’re still stuck in the same world that we're fighting to change.

While I absolutely feel that it’s important to recognize the barriers still in place, it’s also equally important to set aside time to recognize and celebrate where we are now in this world and how far we’ve come.

I'd like to take this time to talk not only about some of my favorite coffees, but specifically coffees that are roasted by women-owned roasteries. Bonus, some of these coffees have the added bonus of coming from women producers as well!

Absolutely delicious coffee from Panther to brew as both a pour over and an espresso. Every so often, I’ll buy a bag to use on my Flair Espresso Maker, and having that bit of cherry pop through the milk when I make a latte is just insert-chef’s-kiss-here!

I don’t normally gravitate towards dark roasts, but both my Mom and Dad enjoy a bolder cup. So when I come along to visit I try to bring something new for them to try. While it is darker than most of the coffees I enjoy, there’s a great natural brown sugar-sweetness that just wins me over. Of course, with any dark roast, there is a smidge of bitterness, but everything works out to a great balance with this coffee from Greater Goods.

This coffee from Mother Tongue tastes like the pastry I wish I had to go along with it, as there is a slight floral hint in the background of some nutty and chocolate notes.

This is also one of those coffees that remind us that it’s never really just coffee. The Rodriguez family (whom we have to thank for this delicious cup!) also helped to organize free dental cleanings for all of the children in their local community. Last year they were able to help over 100 kiddos and plan to grow the program even more.

A good decaf really makes my day and I love finding one that has flavor notes so similar to what you’d expect from a candy bar.

The producer Peixoto worked with, Ana Mustafá, comes from a long lineage of coffee growers. After watching her father grow and sell coffee, Ana felt she needed to continue his legacy. When she was ready, she inherited his farms both in La Celia and Pereira.

Ana’s focus for the farms has been to invest heavily in infrastructure and plant health. The result: higher quality cherries on the farm, along with better yields and efficiency.
